DISCOVER WHERE TO STAY IN SCOTLAND
Usually, it’s a case of finding somewhere to rest your head in your chosen destination but sometimes, it’s the other way around; a special accommodation is what entices you to visit a certain location.
Browsing accommodation around Scotland is a top hobby of mine and I have multiple wish-lists under various categories, which I intend to work my way through over the years, and of course, recommend to other people.
Before you begin your search, it’s worth having a wee think about what sort of accommodation and facilities you’re looking for.
Are you planning to spend very little time in your room or are you dreaming of getting cosy somewhere scenic and secluded?
Would you like travel on a budget or splurge on something luxurious? Maybe somewhere in the middle of the two.
Whatever you fancy, there is accommodation to suit every travel style and budget.
Accommodation types in scotland
> Campsites – for those who want to travel on a budget with their own tent but with the comfort of on-site facilities e.g. showers, toilets, cooking areas etc. Many campsites can electric hook ups for motorhomes and campervans.
> Glamping – the term for ‘glam camping’, this quirky category includes pods, wigwams, domes, yurts, shepherd’s huts and small cabins etc. This is my favourite type of accommodation!
> Hostels – brilliant for budget travel and for meeting other people. Most hostels also have private rooms (I’m well past my days of shared dorms!). Hostels are not just for youths; they welcome a wide range of ages and backgrounds.
> Bed & breakfasts – perfect for a more local and personable touch; homely comforts, warm hospitality, cooked breakfasts and local tips from your hosts, who will live on-site.
> Self-catering holiday lets – think apartments, cottages and houses which are perfect for longer stays and cooking your own meals. Some are managed by local hosts while others are agencies or booked through Airbnb and VRBO.
> Hotels – this accommodation type needs no introduction. A popular choice when staying in cities or for resort-style hotels in more rural/scenic areas. There are many iconic, luxury hotels around Scotland if you’re looking for something extra special.
